The baby of the flute family, the piccolo (Italian for small) is basically a half-size flute. It has the same fingerings as a normal sized flute (although smaller fingers are an advantage!) and is played in the same manner.
Flautists sometimes ‘double’ (play both) on piccolo, but it’s a very frequently used member of the orchestra so often a player will be a specialist in piccolo and only play that instrument. It has a brilliant and sparkling tone and because it sounds an octave (8 notes) above the flute it is used to accompany melody lines to add twinkle.
